Is it formatted as HFS+? Click on its icon and choose Get Info from the File menu and it will either say it is HFS Extended (Journaled), or APFS, or possibly ExFAT if it was sold to be usable on Macs and Windows.
So, lets assume you have a spare USB flash drive. This is done in Disk Utility, and if you need that explained, just ask and I will provide more details. It doesnt have to be the ENTIRE device, but if you have other data and want to keep it, you will have to repartition the drive first and add a new HFS+ (aka HFS Extended - Journaled) volume of about 20 GB to it. NOTE: This entire process requires that you have some type of drive you are able to allow to be erased first, typically a USB flash drive or hard drive. This is a command line tool, so you have to use it in Terminal, which is in your Utilities folder. You just need to go to the Resources folder, and look for something called "createinstallmedia". I followed mr Macintosh on YT to erase the mac and upgrade in safe mode. I went to the extreme and I regret it deeply. I kept getting failed to personalize the software update Error like 4 times, even when I decided to upgrade only to Big Sur, not Mont. I bought a m1 air a couple of days ago, first ever Apple device, and wanted to do all the upgrades before i start working on it. Plz consider helping me in this super busy time of year.
